The Coppermines & Lakes - Heritage

The Coppermines Museum

1 Museum Opening Easter 2007

We are currently changing the internal layout of our museum building.
Using our huge collection of Victorian and Edwardian artifacts it will celebrate the achievements of the "old men" who made Coniston Coppermines the largest coppermine in England - for a while !

2 Film Props - Period vehicles, implements and tools

Amassed over the last 35 years items from our extensive collection are available for hire to the film industry..
Most of the collection comes from the Lake District - saved from being dispersed away from the area or in many cases - put on the bonfire !

Our hundred year oldVictorian Governess or "Tub" car was until recently, regularly driven by a lady from Windermere and is still in outstanding condition.

3 The Coppermines Cottages

For many years our beautiful Lakeland scenery, spectacular mountain crags, cascading waterfalls and period buildings have inspired photographers from all over the world.

Our cottages and their locations, particularly at Coppermines Valley, are regularly used for location shots. Many of our period cottage interiors with welcoming log fires are perfect for many applications.

4 The Coppermines Collection

The majority of The Coppermines collection was originally assembled by Philip Johnston, who has travelled throughout the county and beyond looking for original items to enhance the collection !

5 The Red Carts

The collection includes five or six coupe (tip) carts which a hundred years ago were used for general haulage and fitted with harvest gear for the summer.

Many were used in mining & quarrying and utilised a sledge to act as the brake ! on steep slopes

Most were painted with red oxide and we regularly lend some of our collection to the village for seasonal flower displays.

"Miss Potter" the movie made recently in The Lakes, features one of our Red Carts in the farmyard at Hill Top.

6 Our Stores

Our collection is now at the size where we cannot display everything in the museum.

This is just a corner of one of our stores, with most items in original condition not dissimilar to how it might of looked in 1880 !

7 The Ralli Car

This old car is typical of the ultra lightweight runabouts used by Victorian people in a hurry !

8 The Appleyard Collection

Early in 2004 we aquired Peter Appleyard's collection from Torver.
Peter started collecting in 1970 and his collection of "sheep related" bygones is exceptional.

We will soon be able to show some of it at The Coppermines, but is is always available for film use.
